My husband jokes I moved to Albuquerque from Las Vegas because I’m not a gambler.  And he’s right about that (I also did it to marry him).  But clearly, I’m not one to risk money and possessions.  So it was a surprise to a lot of people that I would get an auto title loan to cover an unavoidable expense.  

And, I’d do it again if I had to.

My husband had a construction site accident in 2006.  Because he has lingering injuries he’s not able to work.  He’s non union so the disability he had was not very much.  He’s able to take care of the kids while I work, so that has some pluses.  

Fortunately I work and our family is on the company health insurance benefits program.  But that has been disappointing lately too. My co-workers and I have had to pay much higher premiums the past several years. We are responsible for bigger deductibles and co-pays, meanwhile, premiums are going up rapidly and we’re paying a greater percentage of those. Costs to our family rose in two years by more than $350 per month.  

Andy is on medications for pain, and recently an operation was undertaken to help ease that.  To my shock, our out-of-pocket costs came in at $3800. We did not have this cash sitting in a bank or under a mattress anywhere. We also had used much of our home equity to renovate a kitchen and a bathroom in 2005.  Given the current economic state, the bank had no interest in extending the size of that loan now.  We technically have “bad credit” because of all that’s happened  We actually considered selling our house, but realized we’d owe $30,000 on it after the sale if we could find a buyer at all.  Who needs to be homeless with a $30,000 bill?

So it came down to the idea about the car title loan.  It was a way to cover the medical bill and help bring back our credit rating.
