On most things I’m pretty decisive.  But where it comes to health and money I sometimes waste important, valuable time.

Because our mother died of colon cancer, my sister and I get colonoscopies every three years. That worked fine when I worked for a big company with good medical insurance benefits.  But I was laid off from my job in 2006 and was unemployed for a year before finding another one in Los Lunas.  They don’t offer health insurance.  So now I am at four years past my last colonoscopy (I had two polyps then), with bad credit and no extra cash to cover the cost of the procedure, which is around $2500.

Much as I tried to not think about it, I had a bad dream that woke me up one night.  So I went online to see if I could find some fast cash somewhere.  Google took me to Albuquerque Car Title Loans, and they told me my Subaru was worth $4000 in loans.  I didn’t hesitate then: I filled out the online application in 20 minutes and was approved in an hour.  I called my doctor that same day to set an appointment.

The good news is I’m cancer free.  What a relief!  Now that I’ve been through that I’m looking for a new job, one with better benefits. A vehicle title loan in these circumstances make all the sense in the world.

My husband jokes I moved to Albuquerque from Las Vegas because I’m not a gambler.  And he’s right about that (I also did it to marry him).  But clearly, I’m not one to risk money and possessions.  So it was a surprise to a lot of people that I would get an auto title loan to cover an unavoidable expense.

My husband had a construction site accident in 2006.  Because he has lingering injuries he’s not able to work.  He’s non union so the disability he had was not very much.  He’s able to take care of the kids while I work, so that has some pluses.

We also had used much of our home equity to renovate a kitchen and a bathroom in 2005.  Given the current economic state, the bank had no interest in extending the size of that loan now.  We technically have “bad credit” because of all that’s happened  We actually considered selling our house, but realized we’d owe $30,000 on it after the sale if we could find a buyer at all.  Who needs to be homeless with a $30,000 bill?

So it came down to the idea about the car title loan.  It was a way to cover the medical bill and help bring back our credit rating.
